Colin worked for Hays for 18 months progressing from Trainee Recruitment Consultant to Manager before resigning and setting up Contract Construction in June 1990 along with Ian Storer. Ian and Colin worked together for 8 years before de-merging the business. Colin took on full responsibility for the Scottish business which was renamed Contract Scotland.
Contract Scotland progressed from an initial turnover of £2.2m in 1998 to just over £20m 20 years later, employing 40 plus staff in Stirling. Colin is still the majority shareholder in the business.
Over the years Colin has looked to do things differently such as treating staff as recruitment professionals rather than commission-based salespeople, providing training courses to temporary workers, being heavily involved in CSR and orchestrating a succession plan for the business. Awards over the years have included successes at the Recruiter Awards, SME 300 Insider Awards, APSCo Awards and achieving the Community Mark for CSR as well as being a finalist at several Entrepreneur of the Year events.
